How do I setup SPAM filtering?
If you wish to set up SPAM filtering, you need to do the following:
- Login to your control panel at http://www.example.com/user/ (replace example.com with your domain name)
- Click on 'Spam Filter' under 'Email'.
- Set the SPAM tolerance level -This specifies how many positive hits with regard to SPAM-typical phrases an email must have before it is reported as SPAM. The higher this value is, the less sensitive the filter reacts and the more SPAM will pass through it undetected. The recommended value is 5.00 (Low).
- Then set what to do with SPAM; It can be delivered to your inbox, filed into a separate IMAP or webmail folder, or it can be deleted on the server. Choose to delete SPAM at your own risk! We do not accept the responsibility for loss of emails if you decide to auto-delete detected SPAM! If you do not use IMAP or webmail, then it is recommended that you don't select the 'Move spam email to my blocked folder' option.
- You can choose to deliver as an attachment or Add Text to Beginning of the Subject : (enter in the box how you would like it marked e.g. [SPAM])
If you are using webmail, then it would be best to select the box 'Move spam email to my blocked folder', so that SPAM goes into a separate folder and doesn't clog up your inbox. That way, you could just quickly check that folder to make sure that no legitimate mail has been caught as SPAM and then delete it in one go. To be able to view the blocked mail folder you need to wait for a while (until a SPAM email arrives) then login at http://www.example.com/webmail, click on 'folders' and subscribe to the 'Spam' folder.
Alternatively, if you are using a mail client such as Outlook or Outlook Express, you could set the spam to be delivered to your inbox and set it to 'Add text to beginning of the subject : [SPAM]' and then create a folder in Outlook called SPAM and set up a message rule in Outlook to move all emails with [SPAM] in the subject line to the SPAM folder.
You could experiment and set a custom figure for SPAM lower than 5, but you would need to check it thoroughly, because there is more chance of legitimate mail being picked up that way.
If you only usually receive mail from certain people, then you could put their email addresses in the allowed senders list (click on 'Allowed Senders' under 'Email') and set the filter really low, such as 1 (don't forget to include our email addresses!). Also if you are receiving unwanted mail from certain senders, you could add their email addresses to the blocked senders list (click on 'Blocked Senders' under 'Email') but this will only treat the mail as SPAM and not block them from being received altogether. In order to reject mail completely from a certain sender, you would need to login at http://example.com/admin and click on 'Reject list' under 'Email'. This would reject mail from those senders to all users at your domain.
Allowed Senders: Here you can specify which people are allowed to send you email that should never ever be tagged as SPAM. Valid inputs are complete or partial email addresses and domain names. Multiple addresses have to be put on separate lines, one address per line. A wildcard (*) can be used like *@yahoo.com or *@*.yahoo.com. In that case it doesn't matter if the sender address is user_a@yahoo.com or user_b@yahoo.com or even user_c@mail.yahoo.com.
Blocked Senders: All email from the complete or partial email addresses and domains listed here will always be tagged as SPAM. Wildcards (*) are allowed. If you want to add more than one address, then put each on its own line.
